Study Options for Bachelor applicants

Germany is one of the most popular destinations for international students aspiring to study at one of the best universities in Europe. With over more than 400 universities, Germany offers high quality education with globally recognised qualifications.

One can choose to study from Aerospace Engineering to Zoology state universities in Germany without having to pay any tuition fees. Education in Germany is free for everyone be it national or international students. What students pay at the university is only the semester contribution in between 200-300 Euros/semester. Given the huge number of universities and the programs, it can be difficult for Nepalese students to know what, where and how to study in Germany. To make these things easier, we have classified the programs based on

Nepalese students have different study options or different tracks in which they can enrol at a German university. The study track a student has to follow depends upon his qualifications and his program of choice. For e.g. a student aspiring to study Medicine in Germany must choose to study apply through the studienkolleg track and study Medicine in German medium. Similarly a student with A-levels qualification can directly study Bachelor degree in English medium in Engineering/ IT in Germany provided that they meet the admission requirements and the language proficiency, however if an A-level student wants to study Medicine in Germany, he or she must learn German language up to B1 level in Nepal and another 6 months at a university in Germany before s/he can start their studies in Germany. Given such variations based on the qualifications or the tracks offered in Germany, we have categorised the study options in the following way.

  1. German taught Bachelor degree programs at Public university 
  2. English taught Bachelor degree programs at Public university
  3. English taught Bachelor degree programs at private universities 

1. German taught Bachelor programs at Public universities


A vast number of universities offer bachelor degree programs in German medium in Germany. Programs such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy are only offered in German medium at state universities. You will need an excellent German language proficiency in order to get admission in these programs. Nepalese students aspiring to study German taught programs in Germany can do so either by learning German language up to B1/B2 level followed by a one-year foundation course at the Studienkolleg or by learning German up to B1/B2 level followed by DSH-2 Examination leading to Bachelor degree based on their qualifications gained in Nepal. 



i. 10+2/CBSE students

If you have completed your 10+2 level of education in Nepal and would like to study medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or engineering sciences, you need to learn German language up to B1/B2 level in Nepal followed by an entrance examination known for entry in the foundation course leading to Bachelor degree at a state university in Germany without having to pay tuition fees. Students going through this track have excellent chances of getting admission in the top ranked German universities for their Bachelor degrees. Many of our students have already completed their studies from universities like LMU Munich, TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT Karlsruhe, TU Darmstadt, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main to name a few. 



ii. A- Levels students


A- Levels with proper subject combinations is recognised as an equivalent to German Abitur and such students can study directly at a German university upon having passed the DSH-2 Examination provided they have passed B1 level in Nepal. For studying Medicine, Engineering and or highly competitive subjects, such students must have excellent grades in A-levels and must have a very good German language proficiency. 



iii. 10+2 + 1/2 year of studies at a university in Nepal

If you have passed your first year Bachelor degree in Nepal, you are eligible for studying Bachelor degree in Germany upon having passed the DSH-2 Examination in Germany. It is also possible for you to take other examinations such as TestDaF and obtain the required grades for admission in Bachelor degree. 


2. English taught bachelor programs at Public universities

i. 10+2/CBSE students

10+2 or CBSE qualifications are not recognized for admission in English taught Bachelor degree programs at public universities. There may be a few exceptions but it the courses are limted to a few courses only.

ii. A- Levels students


Students who have completed their A-levels with the required subject combination can study English taught bachelor degree programs at public universities provided that they have an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent. However English taught programs are limited in number and very good grades are required for  

iiI. 10+2/CBSE students + 1 year of studies in Nepal

If you have passed your first year bachelor studies, you may be eligibel to study English taught Bachelor programs in select subjects at public unviersities without having to pay tuition fees. 

3. English taught bachelor programs at Private Universities

If you have completed 10+2 or equivalent, you can apply for studying English taught bachelor degree programs at a private university in Germany without having to complete a one year foundation course.

If you have completed 10+2 with management studies, you can apply for studying the foundation course in English for a year followed by English taught Bachelor degree programs at a public or private university in Germany.

Study Tracks for Bachelor degree Applicants

Based on your qualifications, choice of your Bachelor degree program and the availability of the programs, it is possible for you to study in Germany in the following way:

1. Studienkolleg Track (ENG/GER)

If your academic qualification is not recognized as an equivalent to German University Entrance Qualification, you will be required to complete a one year foundation course at the Studienkolleg before you can start your Bachelor degree. This is the most popular pathway for students aspiring to study at a top ranked university in Germany for free. 

Similarly it is possible for you to attend the foundation course in English medium at a private university followed by English taught program in Bachelor degree without having to pay tuition fee. This option is available only for management students who have completed their 10+2.

2. Direct Entry

If your academic qualifications are equivalent to German university Entrance Qualifications, you may be eligible to study German/ English taught program without having to attend the foundation course at the Studienkolleg. Generally 10+2 from Nepal is not considered as an equivalent to German University Entrance Qualification, however a few private universities accept students with 10+2 qualification for studying English taught Bachelor program without having to attend the foundation course.

i. Passport
ii. SEE Transcripts & Character
iii. 10+2 (NEB) Transcripts and Character
iv. B1/B2 Certificate (for German taught programs only)
v. IELTS or equivalent test (for English taught programs only)
vi. Additional documents like, portfolio, motivation and reference letters may be required based on the requirements of specific programs.
