How much is the tuition fee in Germany?

There are no tuition fees for studying in Germany except for the universities in the state of Baden Wurttemberg. At the moment non-EU students pay fees of 1500 Euros per semester in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany. What students usually pay is the semester contribution which amounts to 100-300 Euros per semester only apart from living costs at public universities.

A few fees paying English taught programs are also offered at public and private universities, the cost of which can vary from program to program and university to university. On an average the tuition fee for English taught Bachelor programs is around 5000 Euros per semester at a private university.

How much does an international student need per month for living cost?

German authorities estimate that an international student will need 863 Euros per month for his/her living expenses in Germany, however this amount depends more or less on the lifestyle and personal spending habits. 

International Students are allowed to work part time 120 full days or 240 half days per year in Germany. It is recommended to have some German language skills up to A2 level for your day to day life in Germany and to find some part time jobs during your study in English taught program.

International students are issued with 18 months job search visa after the completion of their studies in Germany. If students find suitable jobs related to their previous studies, they are eligible to apply for EU Blue card which entitles them to stay and work in Germany for as long as they want.

When is the next intake for studying in Germany?

There are 2 intakes in Germany, summer semester starting in March/April whereas winter semester starts in September/October. The next intake is March 2020. The application deadlines can vary from university to university and program to program. Early application at least 6-8 weeks before the deadline is highly recommended.

What types of programs are available?

Broadly speaking the following types of programs are available in Germany based on the language of instruction:

What are the study options available?

Based on your qualification and interest or program choice, there are mainly three study tracks available for students aspiring to study Bachelor degree in Germany.

Studienkolleg track:
Usually the 10+2 level from Nepal is not recognised as an equivalent to German University Entrance Qualifications and hence such students are required to study a one-year foundation course at the studienkolleg before they can begin their studies in Bachelor degree. The requirement for studying the foundation course is min. B1 certificate. Some universities may require B2. Upon the completion of the foundation course at public universities/state Studienkollegs, you can choose to study in English taught programs if your program of interest is available in English

It is also possible for students to study at an English taught foundation course especially for Management students, subject to tuition fee and later apply for studying in English taught program at a state university.

DSH-2 Track:
If your school leaving qualification is recognized as an equivalent to German university entrance qualification, it is possible for you to study a German taught program at a public university. Here you will have to learn German for at least 6 months and apply for admission and upon arriving at the university learn German for a semester leading to DSH-2 Examination.

Direct Admission:
It is possible for you to study Bachelor degree in English medium if your university entrance qualification is recognized as an equivalent to German university entrance qualification and the program of your choice is available in English at a public or private university.

A few private and government universities offer direct admission to 10+2 graduates in English taught programs, however the number of programs are limited.

What are the entry requirements for studying Bachelor degree in Germany?

The entry requirements for studying bachelor degree based on the study tracks is as follows:

The requirements for programs such as medicine, dentistry and/or highly competitive programs is GPA of at least 3.0 in 10+2. ** These requirements should be taken as a general guideline only and can vary from university to university and program to program.

What is the duration of Bachelor degree studies in Germany?

Most Bachelor degrees in Germany are of 3 years duration and some can be 3.5 or 4 years depending upon the program. The duration of medicine/dentistry studies is 6 years including a 48-week internship. The duration mentioned here neither takes in account the time required to learn German nor takes in account the duration of the foundation course.

Can I study Medicine for free in Germany?

Can I study Engineering in English medium at a state university with 10+2?

Yes, it may be possible to study English taught Engineering programs with very little or no tuition fees if you have excellent grades in your 10+2 and IELTS 6.0. Which German language examination do I need to take to be eligible for admission?

You will need to learn German for at least 6 months and pass B1 level of examination for studying either the foundation track in German or DSH-2 track.

How much time does it take to achieve the required proficiency for admission?

Learning is an individual process and you may need more or less 6-8 months depending on how well you learn German and allocate time for it.

Is IELTS mandatory for studying an English taught program in Germany?

IELTS or any other equivalent test is mandatory for studying an English taught program in Germany. A few private universities may accept Duolingo test but we highly recommend you take standardised tests if you want to study in Germany.

I am currently waiting for my Grade XII Examinations. Should I join German language at the moment to prepare for my studies in Germany?

Yes, students who are in Grade XII at the moment can join our online German courses during this pandemic, however it is important that you assess your situation very carefully before starting the German course because if you are not that great in studies and unable to manage time for your German course and your preparation for Grade XII Examinations, you may have German language proficiency but you may not have passed Grade XII examinations to be able to apply for your studies.
