Intakes and Deadlines

If you want to study in Germany, apply as early as possbible ! 

There are mainly two intakes in Germany summer intake and winter intake. 

Semester System

The academic year is divided in two semesters i.e. Summer Semester and Winter Semester. Summer semester starts in March/April and the winter semester starts in September/October.

However, there may be an additional intake at private universities in around May/June but that largely depends individual university or college. 

Application Deadlines

The last application deadlines for summer semester is January 15th and for winter semester is July 15th. Individual university or individual programs may have their own deadlines. 

1. German taught Bachelor/Master program (Direct Entry)

Most of the bachelor programs have the application deadline of 15th July for the winter semester and 15th January for the summer semester. 


2. English taught bachelor program in Germany (Direct Entry) 

The normal deadlines for English taught bachelor programs is 15th July for the winter semester and 15th January for the summer semester, however some universities or programs may have earlier deadlines. 

3. English taught Master programs in Germany

Normally the deadlines for English taught master programs at public universities is around April/May for the winter semester and around October/November for the Summer Semester. This is because the selection process for the Master programs are lengthy and can take time in addition to the additional 6 to 8 weeks’ time period for visa application process. 

4. German taught Foundation Programs in Germany

Students applying for undertaking the entrance examination at the foundation course at public university should apply for a place at the university before 15th April or 15th May for the winter semester or October 15th/November 15th for Summer semester for most Studienkolleg places. The entrance examinations are usually in June/August/September for the programs beginning for the winter semester and the entrance examination are usually in January/February for the start date in Summer Semester. 

5. Private University Programs

If you are planning to study an English taught program at a private university, sometimes you can apply as late as June/July for winter semester or until January for the Summer Semester. However, you must note that at times it can be very difficult to get your appointment for visa application even though you receive your admission letter quickly.

However, you must submit you application early enough given the amount of time required for the application processing and time required for visa application at the German Embassy Kathmandu.
