What kind of degrees are offered in Germany?

Germany not only offers a first-rate education at its universities in Germany but also the degree obtained from Germany is recognised all over the world. If you want to study your Bachelor degree in Germany, you may want to understand the types of degrees offered in Germany before starting process for studying in Germany. 

A bachelor degree is the first professional qualification recognised in the job market at an international level. A bachelor degree in Germany is awarded normally after six to eight semesters of studies with exception of medicine and dentistry which is a different type of degree program. Students can look for a job or continue their studies at master’s level upon the completion of bachelor degree. In exceptional cases, students with excellent grades in their bachelor degree level are also eligible to apply directly for doctoral programmes, provided that other conditions are met. 

All German universities offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Additionally, awards such as “Magister”, “Diplom”, or “Staatsexamen” for some degree courses. Hence, it is important for students to check the descriptions carefully before starting the university application process for the chosen degree program.  Below, you can find the most common degrees offered in Bachelor level at German universities. 

Bachelor degrees in Germany (BA, BSC, B.Eng etc)

Bachelor of Arts degree is usually of 3 years or 6 semester duration at most universities in Germany. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Germany is usually offered for students studying humanities, and management faculties.


Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree is usually of 3 years or 6 semester and at some universities it can be also of 7 semesters. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) is usually offered for technical and science courses and in some cases some university can also offer a BSc. Degree in Management or Finance or similar subjects. 

Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree is usually of 7 or 8 semesters at most universities. It is mainly for the Engineering sciences program.

Master degrees in Germany (MA, MSc,etc)

If you want to study for a master’s degree, you are normally required to complete a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent academic qualification first. For certain master’s courses some practical work experience may also be required. The master’s title is generally awarded after studying for two to four semesters (one to two years). After your master’s degree you may choose to study for a doctoral degree.

Staatexamen (State Examination)

This is an examination that doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, food chemists, and teachers have to pass after the completion of their studies and before they can work in Germany. It means that the final examination is conducted by a government board where the examination is regulated by the state government. State examination is an important examination if you want to work as a physician in Germany. You can sit the first state examination following theoretical academic studies in law, medicine and pharmacy, or after a teacher training course. After that, you will be prepared for the second state examination by a practical training period.
